Thais Beltrame's solo exhibition | "When All The Stars Are Gone" - Carmichael Gallery, LA

When All The Stars Are Gone, the first US solo exhibition of work by Brazilian artist Thais Beltrame, comes to LA’s Carmichael Gallery on Thursday, May 7th, 2009 from 7– 10pm, with the artist in attendance. A new series of ink and watercolor works on paper will be on display, as well as a site-specific installation.

Thais’ When All The Stars Are Gone is a poetic glimpse of the world as perceived by the artist. Looking to the skies for inspiration, the artist reflects upon solitude, beauty, and the transient nature of being.

“Supposedly all the stars we see today have been dead millions of years,” she muses. “Perhaps this is why human beings feel so alone: we live beneath a sky which no longer exists.”

In this newest body of work, Thais’ trademark wistful children are changing, growing stronger, wiser, and more aware of their surroundings. From this growth emerge new fears and dilemmas, however, as observed in the artist’s shift from negative space to a brooding application of earthy watercolors.

About the Artist: Thais Beltrame was born and lives in Sao Paulo. The largely self-taught artist grew up amongst a generation of Brazilian counter-culture in the 80s and 90s. Highly regarded for her subtle, distinctive style, she is the sole female member of the powerhouse Brazilian art collective, the Famiglia Baglione . Thais has exhibited her work in the United States, United Kingdom, and Brazil.

In February 2009, after interviewing the British artist contingency of A Força da Rua, director Lorna Lavelle took the trip to São Paulo to meet the Brazilian artists and to immerse herself in the city’s street art scene. 10 days of shooting interviews, artist studios and galleries (such as Choque Cultural gallery who represent A Força da Rua‘s Calma, Speto and Titi Freak) and meeting contributing musicians such as N.A.S.A, Lorna also visited the projects supported by the ABC Trust.

Projects such as AA Criança; based in the Sé region of downtown São Paulo (where approximately 12,000 homeless children live on the streets of Sé alone) who work through aid, drop-in day centres, human rights workshops and educate through art and culture projects. Graffiti art, dance and music are such a powerful force in Brazilian culture that organisations like AA Criança realise how São Paulo’s youth are much more likely to identify with and be empowered by art and music than formal educational systems. One of these centres was CASA 20, a drop in centre where children who lived on the streets of Sé could find sanctity, get a shower, wash their clothes and attend workshops. It was here that Lorna met Everaldo Santos Oliverira, the project co-ordinator of AA Crianca and Emma Boustead, a British AA Criança volunteer for the past six years.

Following a stunning series of shorts for Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Amnesty and SHOWstudio, music videos for the Rhys Ivans-fronted band The Peth, Lupe Fiasco and UNKLE, 2009 sees the multi-talented 24-year-old director Lorna Lavelle move into feature films. Her first will be the three-years-in-the-making Man From UNKLE, followed by a documentary on the notorious Warhol-era satire Brand X, Conquest, narrated by The Cult's Ian Astbury, exposing the illegal US government drug testing of Native American women and the Brazilian and British street art documentary entitled Weapon of Choice.

- HERBERT è da oltre dieci anni uno degli esponenti più attivi della scena artistica di San Paolo (Brasile). Insieme ad altri artisti quali Os Gemeos, Speto e Vitchie ha avuto un’ampia e riconosciuta influenza sul movimento street art brasiliano e internazionale. Nei suoi dipinti e illustrazioni colpisce lo stile deciso, contraddistinto da una spiccata attitudine alla linearità del tratto tipica della grafica, ma non per questo le sue opere sono da considerarsi prive d’intensità e di particolari. Grazie all’inserzione di elementi calligrafici, alla rielaborazione della grande scuola Art Nouveau di fine 800, nonchè dell’immaginario fiabesco e decadente del disegnatore vittoriano Aubrey Beardsley, riesce ad unire la modernità del design attuale all’espressività dell’illustrazione d’epoca.

Aconteceu a X Bienal de Havana que escolheu o tema “INTEGRAÇÃO E RESISTÊNCIA NA ERA GLOBAL” porque considera importante o papel da arte no mundo globalizado.
O artista Walter Nomura participou juntamente a um projeto do artista plastico brasileiro Julio Leite, chamado Galeria Cilindro e contou com a curadoria de Leonor Amarante.
O projeto da Galeria Cilindro na X Bienal de Havana consistiu de 3 performances realizadas em 3 dias e horarios diferentes, sendo a primeira durante a abertura da Bienal no Forte Cabaña, a segunda no Centro Comunitario LASA e a terceira na Escola de Belas Artes de San Alejandro onde em todas as performances foram convidados alunos estudantes de arte e pessoas da comunidade local para a participação.
Ao final, a Galeria Cilindro foi montada dentro de um dos espacos de exposição dentro da Bienal, no Morro, juntamente com os macacoes e bicicletas usadas nas performances.

Tinho aka Walter Nomura is one of the Brazil's graffiti pioneers and punk art skateboarders who started skating at the age of 9 and painting graffiti at 13, in 1986. His art has sprung from the global graffiti and skate art movements, and he is dedicated in supporting the Brazilian skateboard industry, providing a blanket of graphics whilst exhibiting his social, dramatic and political style worldwide - from Buenos Aires and Berlin to London's Embassy of Brazil and last year's monumental collaboration with the US Beautiful Losers exhibition entitled Transfer in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

A Famiglia tem obras dos artistas Alexandre Cruz "Sesper" e Flavio Samelo expostas no Espaço AEIOU, que faz parte do roteiro do 8º Arte na Vila, evento que é oficialmente incluído no calendário turístico de São Paulo, conta com vans gratuitas que seguem um roteiro pelas galerias e ateliês situados na Vila Madalena nesse dia 4 e 5.
